On November 14, 1996 the revival of Chicago the musical opened on Broadway. 25 years later we are still here, holding the title of Longest Running American Musical. In May 1996, the musical premiered at City Center Encores! and Fran and Barry Weissler decided to take the leap and move it to Broadway. It won 6 Tony Awards that year, including Best Revival of a Musical. During its open years, the shows has moved venues twice, playing at 3 different Broadway theaters, opening at the Richards Rodgers Theatre (currently the home of smash hit Hamilton), then moved to the Shubert Theatre, before moving in 2003 to its current home at the Ambassador Theatre.
The special anniversary performance featured a proclamation by the Mayor of NYC, appearances by former stars and Tony Award Winners Joel Grey, James Naughton and Bebe Neuwirth, a dedication to Choreographer Ann Reinking by Charlotte d’Amboise and a full marching band and drum line!
Here’s to 25 more!
